Session 1, Week 0

The first day of a new school year, with new studios, new guides, a new building and yet, the same old goals! What do we hope for on the first day? That heroes feel welcomed, get out of their comfort zone, begin getting to know one another and start building their tribe… oh, and have a lot of fun doing so! How did it go? Let’s see…

The Spark Studio had a blast getting to know one another.

We explored all the fun works in the studio:

When given the option to do any work in the studio, it was fun to see some heroes run straight for their language works!

And even got to go on a treasure hunt!

The energy in the studio was beautiful. We are ready for this next adventure!

The Fire Studio switches between two studios each day. They have a Core Studio (where they will work on their personal goals) and a Quest studio (where they will engage in Quests). Fire Studio heroes pushed through challenges to discover a treasure and build new friendships. They engaged in their first Socratic Discussions and their first D.E.A.R. (drop everything and read). Oh, and they played lots of games!

In Quest studio they enjoyed a day of games to master faces, names, and favorite things to help all feel known and welcome. When challenged with creating “The Longest Shadow,” it was amazing (as usual) to watch FS Heroes work and brainstorm together, resulting in a shadow that stretched twice as long as they originally imagined. We had to get some pictures when at the end of the day, all heroes said they wanted to clean the studio and went to work without any kind of system let alone a discussion about Studio Maintenance! Accompanied by some favorite tunes – heroes had fun dancing and cleaning together!

The DELTA Studio began their year as leaders, welcoming all heroes to school. It was awesome to see them meet and lead younger heroes to their new studios.

The DELTAs engaged in several “silly” challenges which they recognized were designed to get them out of their comfort zones, work together in various ways, and get to know one another’s names. It was fun to watch new friendships forming quickly.

Quest time was used for a treasure hunt and some more tribe-building activities.  The Delta Heroes rocked the treasure hunt, despite the guide’s attempts to make it difficult.

As the whole school gathered in the gym during lunch time, two DELTA heroes led us in a game to illustrate the idea that it doesn’t matter our age or studio, at CHOICE we are all friends. It was so fun to see the younger heroes already bonding and connecting with the older heroes.

And then it was the guides turns to truly step out of their comfort zone. There is nothing “comfortable” about being covered in whip cream : ) But it is totally worth it to celebrate the completion of our summer P.I.E. challenges.

The connecting, tribe building and bonding continued as families gathered at our family campout. We all enjoyed rafting, floating the creek, games, camp fires, eating, hiking, mud, tattoos, slinging, werewolf and so much more. But the best part is watching families new and old get to know and enjoy one another.

It has only been 1 day of school + a weekend and we are so very excited to say – Let the Journey Begin!
